Counselling

Did you know that South Lakeland Mind offers a free and confidential counselling service? If you think counselling may be helpful to you, or want to know more, use the contact details on this page or drop in to our Kendal office. We’ll make an appointment so you can discuss it with us. You do not need a referral from a doctor or anyone else.

What is counselling?

Counselling offers a safe and confidential space in which to explore your thoughts and feelings around difficulties you are experiencing. These may be hard to talk about anywhere else, or to people close to you. This can help you to develop a better understanding of yourself, so that you may be able to move towards making changes in your life, and develop strategies for getting through.

When can counselling help?

There are many reasons that you may want to seek support from counselling, such as when feeling anxious, stressed and unable to cope; feeling unhappy or depressed; lacking in confidence and self esteem; having no interest in life and no energy to do things; having family or relationship problems; struggling with a crisis; experiencing loss or bereavement; feeling angry most of the time; and when facing important and difficult issues. Sometimes things from your past which you’ve pushed to one side may be becoming hard to deal with. Having someone who has time to listen can make things seem less overwhelming and help you make sense of what is happening to you. This takes time and commitment to the process.

What can I expect?

Most of our counsellors work in a Person Centred way. You will be respected for who you are, without judgement or criticism, and valued as a unique and resourceful individual. We will work in a sensitive, open and honest way and support you to find your own way forward, rather than giving advice or telling you what to do.

How long does counselling last?

Counselling sessions are usually one hour long and are held weekly. You can discuss how many sessions you may need with your counsellor. This can range from one session to many. Often, you won’t know how many you need at the start of it, so it’s open ended.

Is counselling confidential?

You will be offered a very high level of confidentiality. Anything you say will remain private, with just a few exceptions, which your counsellor will explain to you in the first meeting.

About our counsellors...

Our Counsellors and Counsellors in Training are members of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), work to the BACP Code of Conduct for Counsellors, have regular professional supervision and hold professional insurance.
