Volunteering with Us

South Lakeland Mind is a small but busy charity which exists to improve the quality of life of people experiencing mental and emotional distress in the local area. We do this by offering counselling, peer support, drop in groups and massage therapy; in a recent evaluation, the vast majority of our clients agreed that being in contact with South Lakeland Mind had improved their lives for the better. But we can only make this difference because of the commitment and hard work of our volunteers.

The need for our services is so great that we can never have enough volunteers. Could you help us?

Peer Support

Could you be a peer mentor and give companionship and support to someone who feels isolated? The aim is to increase self confidence and help people to re engage with the community. We also need volunteers to run the daily peer support groups in Kendal.

Community Fundraising

Our enthusiastic and inventive community fundraisers are crucial to our work. Projects undertaken in the last year include a ceilidh, an open garden, a band night, a silent carol service, Christmas tree festival, supermarket and street collections, and we’ve got lots more plans for the future. Come along – it’s sociable, fun and very worthwhile.

We also benefit from the brilliant efforts of individual fundraisers – in the last year people have run 10Ks and half marathons, held parties, done the Keswick to Barrow Walk and long distance bike rides. Could you undertake a challenge for us? Please contact our Community Engagement Officer, Kimberley Andrew at, or phone the office on 10539 740591 if you would like more details.

Massage Therapy

If you are a qualified massage therapist, or a student looking to gain some experience providing massage therapy, why not volunteer with us here at Mind? You can develop your skills as a therapist and see directly the positive impact such services have. At our therapy room in Stricklandgate house we provide all of the resources you need to carry out your sessions including oils, a massage bed and travel costs to and from the sessions. If you have any questions or are wanting to join the team, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us via email or you can call the office on 01539 740 591.
