MP issues rallying cry to save local mental health charity
South Lakes MP Tim Farron has issued a rallying cry after under threat charity South Lakeland Mind announced that they had raised over £50,000.

The charity had been facing the threat of winding up its activities and closing down just before Christmas. This would have left vulnerable people without support over the holiday season.

As a result the charity launched the HELP campaign to save the organisation. Yesterday, they announced that they have received £16,258 in public donations, taking their overall fundraising total to over £50,000.

The charity said that it costs between £60,000-70,000 to run their services for a year.

Tim is continuing to push public bodies, the NHS and councils to step up and help with vital funding. But the MP paid tribute to the 'humbling' support of local people for the charity.

Tim said: "I want to thank every single person who has donated, helped or supported this campaign. The public reaction has been totally overwhelming.

"I will keep pressing and lobbying to secure the funds needed to keep this charity going. I have also offered them support and to bring them together with people who can help the charity become sustainable in the medium to long term.

"But every penny that local people can give to Mind will make a massive, massive difference."

"Tim is absolutely right in thanking every individual who has supported our HELP crisis fundraising campaign, and this support is something we still need. It’s fantastic news that we will still be here after Christmas, but we need to keep fundraising to ensure we can secure a sustainable future for the charity. The support we provide hasn’t stopped for a day during the campaign, and we’re determined that it won’t stop in 2015.

"It’s also good to raise the idea of other support. We need to be working with local business leaders and welcome their input. We need new trustees as well to enhance the board. And we need other volunteers too, to sustain this fundraising in 2015 and beyond. South Lakeland Mind works in a tough financial environment, and needs the best help so that it can keep helping vulnerable people."
